About Bricks by Numbers
At Bricks by Numbers, our vision is simple: to provide insights into the world of LEGO® through data and numbers. We aim to provide a different perspective from the traditional LEGO® metrics (part per piece, weight, etc.) and explore new ways of analyzing what's out there in the LEGO® domain.
The BVI Metric
Bricks by Numbers uses a custom metric, called the Brick Value Index, or BVI. The BVI exists on a continuum, where 0 is the lowest value, 100 is break-even, and the sky's the limit for the highest value.
In the end, the higher the BVI, the higher the brick value of the set.
Our Methodology (BVI v.1)
The overall data is curated from multiple sources, including: Brickset, Rebrickable, and Ashley Pinner's site. All data is pulled in US Dollars (USD).
We remove sets that aren't retail sets from the data. For example, books, gear, gift with purchases, promotional items, CMFs, Duplo sets, sets without retail prices, etc. are not included on Bricks by Numbers.
Data is pulled from the sources and then processed to provide the highest-confidence data points available. Some assumptions are made to fill in missing data points throughout the site. The site prioritizes prices in the following order:
- Pick a Brick (PaB) online prices
- Part prices (Same part number, different color)
- Median price for like-parts prices
If a price is not found, the site may not include it or an assumption may be made based on the priority list above. If an assumption is made, the set will be marked with a caveat on the set page. We also include spare parts in our part counts. Is it perfect? No, but it's a start!
As new prices are made available, the site routinely updates the data and recalculates the BVI for each set.
Each set also includes a data completeness icon (e.g. ) indicating the data completeness based on missing part prices. Sets with incomplete part prices are still included on the site. It should be noted that the BVI for a set with missing part prices will go up as more prices are added to the site. We also include spare parts in our part counts. Because hey -- they come with the set!
In the future, we may add external data sources, such as third-party seller sites, as a way to pull more exact prices into the site. More on that as we grow the data coverage.
About the Founder
Hej!
I’m Matthew VB and am fascinated with the statistics, data, and numbers behind LEGO®. I was a childhood fan of LEGO® and came out of my dark ages in 2020 — recognizing my inner AFOL (Adult Friend of LEGO®) — and embracing it all. I live in the USA and am excited to have you along on the ride.
I started Bricks by Numbers to provide some insights into LEGO® through crunching the numbers. I'm not always sure where the data will lead; however, it's the journey we're often after!
Happy building!
